A good thump is not just loud, it is shaped. When you choose or generate one, decide what is making contact (material), how hard it hits (attack and level), and where it happens (distance and room tone). Use the tips below to get a thump that lands on the frame and does not turn into low-end mud.
Start with the contact material
Material decides the tone and texture. Wood and metal add more mid knock, rubber and cloth sound muted, and body hits sit warm with softer highs. If your thump feels wrong, change the material first before changing volume.
- Prompt: "wood table thump" for a dry mid punch
- Prompt: "rubber thump" for a muted, squishy hit
- Prompt: "body hit thump" for warm low-mids and short tail
Dial the transient and tail for timing
Editors often need the thump to read instantly, then get out of the way. A sharper transient reads on fast cuts, while a longer decay sells size and weight. Match tail length to the shot and the following dialogue or music.
- Ask for a "tight transient" to make the hit feel precise
- Ask for a "short decay" when you need clean spacing between hits
- Ask for an "extended low-end tail" for heavier, cinematic impacts
Match distance and room tone to the camera
Perspective is the difference between a close foley hit and an off-screen bump. Close thumps are drier with more detail; distant thumps have softer attacks and more room reflections. Keep ambience consistent with the scene so the thump feels placed, not pasted.
- Prompt: "close-mic, dry" for a tight, front-and-center hit
- Prompt: "distant, hallway reflections" for off-screen bumps
- Prompt: "small room tone" vs "large room reverb" to fit interiors
Avoid common thump problems
Thumps can easily mask dialogue or cause clipping when stacked. If the hit feels cloudy, reduce sub or shorten decay. If it sounds clicky, soften the transient. If it disappears on small speakers, add a bit more mid punch in your prompt.
- Avoid: "too boomy" low-end that swallows speech consonants
- Avoid: overly long tails that smear rapid action beats
- Avoid: harsh click attacks unless you want a UI-style hit
