An ahh is small, but it carries acting detail: emotion, intensity, and perspective. Use the library descriptions to match attack and tail to your edit, or generate custom takes by prompting the exact feeling, distance, and dryness you need. The goal is a reaction that reads instantly, sits under dialogue cleanly, and does not sound like a random vowel pasted on top.
Match emotion to the scene
Start by choosing the intention behind the sound: surprise, pain, relief, fear, annoyance, or playful delight. The right emotional color is more important than loudness, because a wrong emotion will feel fake even if it is mixed well.
- Surprise: fast attack, bright tone, short decay
- Pain: sharper transient, strained texture, controlled tail
- Relief: softer onset, audible breath, warmer tone
Choose perspective and room feel
Decide whether the listener is close to the mouth or hearing it across space. A close take should stay dry with minimal room tone, while a distant take benefits from softened transients and subtle reflections so it sits naturally with the environment.
- Close-mic: low room tone, tight cutoff, high intelligibility
- Distant: softer attack, more room bed, longer perceived tail
- Stereo width: narrow for focus, wider for crowd or big rooms
Cut-friendly timing and tails
Most reaction ahhs work best when they end cleanly. Pick short clips for hard cuts and UI triggers, and longer ones only when the character is sustaining the feeling. If the clip is too long, it will mask the next line or action beat.
- For hard cuts: short tail and quick fade to silence
- For builds: gradual intensity ramp with controlled peaks
- For dialogue scenes: avoid long ringing decay or heavy reverb
Prompting do and do not list
When generating, be explicit about what you want to hear and what you want to avoid. Small details like breath amount, dryness, and intensity help the model produce a usable take faster.
